Ankur: An ARZ Initiative

Ankur is an ARZ initiative designed to minimize the vulnerability of children to sexual abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, and involvement in anti-social activities. This participative program targets children in Baina, Vasco-da-Gama, Goa, aiming to reduce delinquent behavior and promote positive lifestyle changes. Continuous work with children in the community on their behavior and education has empowered them to pursue lives of dignity and respect, steering the second generation towards a positive way of living.

  • Parental Involvement: Arranging regular visits by parents to ensure children receive emotional support.
  • Continuous Follow-Up: Regularly checking in with boarding school authorities and the children to monitor academic progress and emotional adjustment.
  • Provision of Educational Material: Supplying notebooks, boarding fees, school fees, exam fees, and toiletries to support the children’s education.

Through Ankur, ARZ is committed to creating a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment for vulnerable children, ensuring they have the opportunities and support needed to build a better future.

Case Study

The 19-year-old client is the daughter of a single mother who dropped out of school at a young age. Her mother is a sex worker and a heavy alcohol addict. The client’s mother’s friend sexually abused and kidnapped her, trafficking her to Nepal. She was then rescued by the police and the ARZ team.

The client suffers from trauma and PTSD due to the sexual abuse and kidnapping. She has suffered from a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence and had an unstable family environment.

Today, the ARZ team provides counseling and support to her and helped her enroll in a hostel in Margao to provide a safe and stable environment. They also encouraged her to continue her education.

Despite facing hurdles and unimaginable challenges in life, she has cleared her SSC exams on her first attempt with good scores and has developed confidence and self-esteem. She now expresses hope for further education and skill-building, aspiring to complete her 12th standard and pursue a retailing course in Pune. Her mental health and well-being have significantly improved compared to earlier.

In conclusion, she is now building a better future for herself. Her story inspires hope and highlights the importance of providing support and resources to vulnerable individuals.
