MILAAP: Repatriation and Reintegration

Milaap, an initiative by ARZ, focuses on helping victims of sex trafficking return to their homes and reintegrate into society. For over 25 years, ARZ has been rescuing trafficking victims and guiding them toward a safe and dignified recovery.

Understanding Trafficking

Trafficking often involves the forced movement of women and girls for exploitation. After rescue, a critical step in their healing journey is repatriation—ensuring they can return to their original communities in a way that prioritizes their safety, dignity, and rights. However, this process is not just about relocation; it’s about laying the groundwork for their recovery and preventing re-trafficking.

Repatriation: The First Step

Repatriation is a nuanced process, requiring careful planning and support to ensure the victim’s safety and well-being. ARZ ensures this through:

  • Home Investigations (HIR): Before returning a victim to their home, we assess whether it is safe and supportive, including identifying risks posed by traffickers in the area.
  • Coordination Across Agencies: Repatriation often involves working with local governments, NGOs, and legal bodies to ensure a smooth and safe transition for the victim.
  • Accompanied Return: Considering the trauma survivors have endured, they are accompanied by trained professionals who provide emotional and logistical support throughout the journey.

Reintegration: Rebuilding Lives

Once victims return home safely, reintegration begins. This is a vital phase that focuses on helping them rebuild their lives and find acceptance within their families and communities. Our reintegration efforts include:

  • Counseling for Victims and Families: To address trauma and rebuild relationships, ARZ provides trauma-informed counseling to survivors and their families.
  • Community Engagement: We work with local NGOs and community leaders to create an environment that supports the survivor’s reintegration and reduces stigma.
  • Skill Development and Support: To help victims achieve financial independence and avoid re-trafficking, we connect them with training programs and job opportunities.
