WISH: Economic Rehabilitation

Enabling Exit by Providing Alternative Livelihood

The journey of many victims of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) is marked by repeated physical violence—beating, choking, burning, sexual assault, gang rape—and psychological abuse such as manipulation, threats, and blackmail. Traffickers use these strategies to establish and maintain control over their victims, alternating acts of violence and cruelty with acts of kindness to create strong bonds that make it difficult for victims to leave.

This leads to increased risks of injury, sexual assault, infectious diseases, substance misuse, untreated chronic medical conditions, malnutrition, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, other mental health disorders, homicide, and suicide.

The Challenge of Escaping Exploitation

The challenge of escaping exploitation is compounded by a lack of alternative livelihoods for victims once they are rescued. For many, especially adults, the absence of a sustainable income prevents them from participating in rehabilitation programs. The most crucial requirement for these women to exit prostitution or exploitative situations is access to alternative livelihoods.

Economic rehabilitation, combined with quality psychological assistance, social and legal services, and comprehensive care and protection, provides the essential foundation for the successful rehabilitation of women in prostitution.

Our Ventures

Textile Products: Launched in April 2021, the textile unit upcycles discarded fabrics such as shirts, kurtis, tops, and salwar kameez into useful items like laptop bags, fancy handbags, mobile covers, and pencil pouches. These products are ideal for gifts and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing waste. The process of transforming unwanted materials into valuable products brings hope and a sense of purpose to the victims.

Handcrafted Products: Established in August 2020, this unit repurposes discarded sarees, dupattas, and other fabrics. Using Katha stitch and hand embroidery, the women create stoles, dupattas, table runners, cushion covers, and other household accessories. Additionally, they produce cloth bags for conferences and seminars, promoting eco-friendly practices.

Paper Products: Started in June 2021, the Paper Products Production (PPP) unit manufactures tissue napkins, toilet rolls, and paper bags of various sizes from recycled paper. These products are machine-made, and the unit’s current clients include Manipal, Delfino, Magsons, and the Goa Police Cooperative Society at Altino and Margao.
